Make it Monday: Craftsy
Everything has gone so well with my Christmas makes for my Etsy shop – petit fromage – that it has been so long since I made something that I really wanted to make! Any free sewing time has been taken up with making Christmas gifts for friends and family and fulfilling orders so last week I was determined to make something just for the fun of it. In the end I went with these ‘Wonky pound sign’ quilt blocks. They come together really quickly and I managed to make all 5 in just a couple of hours which was so much fun. I accidentally trimmed one and inch too small so they are 11.5 inches instead of 12.5 inches but that is okay. It was all about learning something new and I really love them.
I want to make 2 more to complete the rainbow colour scheme and then I am going to add sashing and make it into a quilted table runner I think. Or maybe a wall hanging for the kids bedroom.
The block itself was one of the ones in the Craftsy Block of the Month class that I am currently working my way through. Have you heard of Craftsy? Right now I am thinking that it is one of the best things I have discovered in a while. I just came across it completely by chance. They run online classes that you can join any time. They do everything from cake decorating to spinning and weaving, quilting to paper crafts and so much in between. The Block of the Month is a free quiclting class that ran all of last year. I just signed up and have watched the videos for January and February. I can’t wait to get started on the rest but time is a little precious at the moment. As well as that free class I have also signed up for a couple of paid classes, I think they are fantastic value – I am going to start the Machine Quilting one as soon as this has been made into something that needs quilting! You can study at you own pace, the videos are great and the supporting pdf’s have been really great. They have iPhone and iPad apps too so I have been watching the videos as I cook Sunday lunch and wash up. Just brilliant.
I love learning so much and it makes me feel so much happier when I make or do something new. So I am looking forward to the New Year when I will have more time to play and learn. I hope that it will all help inspire me to come up with new and exciting things to sell in my Etsy shop. I have never been very brave and tried to make something without a tutorial or pattern but next year I would really like to start designing some things of my own so all the sewing I do now is great practice. I am heading home for a couple of weeks and I am considering packing my sewing machine. I have got it bad!
