Made It: Aqua Butterflies

January 31, 2014

After my wonderful Crafting weekend with Kat and Heather I have a finished quilt to share.

Aqua Butterflies 3

Originally this quilt was meant to be part of the Scrap Attack {String Fever} Quilt Along over with Rachael at Stitched in Color back in April 2013. I finished the quilt top but never the quilt so it sat in my pile of unfinished projects until I decided it was the perfect quilt for my niece for Christmas. Typically I didn’t get it finished so I have been working on it this month so I can give it to her when we see her in a couple of weeks.

I used this Butterfly Strands block tutorial from Fresh Lemon Quilts but decided to use the Kona Lagoon solid instead of white. I had a bag of scrap strips and selvedges from Katy {Imagingermonkey} and so the fabrics and colours were new to me. I have never been a fan of pink really but that bag of scraps changed all that. These blocks were quick and fun to make. I stopped when I ran out of scraps but I would have happily made this quilt much larger. My stash of pink fabric has grown since then.

I backed it with voile – Shattered in Sun by Anna Maria Horner. It wasn’t as hard to quilt as I thought it would be but the voile didn’t stick so well with the spray baste so I will pin baste if I use any again. I quilted it on the machine. I stitched in the ditch along the seams and then a double line of stitching at the edge of each butterfly ‘wing’. I wanted a bright binding and would have used pink if I had enough in my stash but in the end I couldn’t resist this bee print from Michael Miller that I used on the back of Kate’s quilt. It’s the bees and the butterflies.
