Also known as Super Secret Sewing Project.
As soon as my brother set a date for his wedding I knew I wanted to make them a quilt as a present. All of this sewing that I do and I have never really made anything bigger than a single bed sized quilt so this was a bit scary!
I totally planned to take this quilt to an amazing Cornish location and shoot some brilliant pictures of it before giving it as a gift. However the run up to the wedding was so crazy that as I went to wrap it up on the day of wedding I remembered I hadn’t taken any pictures so grabbed some quick shots on my mum’s front lawn.
Sorry about the legs popping out of the bottom!
The pattern was one I found in a book from the library. Sadly I took it back before writing down what the book was called but it was all about jelly roll quilts. This was my first quilt using a precut of a whole collection and it has me hooked. No worries about whether my fabric choices go together!
It is an Ohio Star with a border and has the added interest of the chopped off corners.
The backing is just one print pieced together.
I managed to make the quilt top in just over a day – it was a really speedy one to make. If I had paid a bit more attention it might have been even quicker – a few blocks sewn the wrong way together had to be unpicked a couple of times!
There was no way I was going to try to quilt this on my domestic machine so I sent it off to the wonderful Trudi who quilted it on her long arm machine. This is the first time I have sent a quilt away and I am desperate now to make one to be sent off for us! Trudi quilted it all over with a swirly heart design that I wanted. Perfect for a wedding gift!
I really enjoyed binding this quilt when it came back. I used my machine to write a message including their name, ‘on your wedding day’, the date* and Love Kelly. So it was labelled but not too in your face. I used a grey diagonal stripe and I love it.
This is my first large quilt and I was so proud of it. I really hope that they like it and will use it for many years to come. They have been together a very long time and so asked for money towards a holiday as presents so I am glad I made them something that they can keep to remember their wedding.

*Funny story: I showed the quilt to my sister the day before the wedding and she asked me why I had put 14 September 2014 instead of June. Bollocks! Much hurried unpicking and hand stitching the correct month in on the morning of the wedding ensued.
This was one of my projects in my Finish Along 2014 – Q2 list.
